How to Calculate Drywall Sheets

Hanging drywall (sheetrock) is estimated by computing the total square footage of wall and ceiling surfaces, dividing by the square footage of your chosen sheet size, and adding a standard **10% waste buffer** to handle framing alignments and window/door cutouts.

Drywall Sheet Sizes compared

  • 4' x 8' Sheets (32 sq ft): The industry standard. Easy to carry and lift. Ideal for small rooms, hallways, and DIY installs.
  • 4' x 10' Sheets (40 sq ft): Popular for 9-foot ceilings. Hanging vertically eliminates horizontal seams.
  • 4' x 12' Sheets (48 sq ft): Used by professionals on long walls. Heavy and difficult to handle but reduces the number of joint seams by 25%.

Additional Supplies Needed

Hanging sheets is only the first step. You will also need joint tape, joint compound (mud), and drywall screws. Here are standard material yields:

  • Drywall Screws: Plan for roughly **30 to 40 screws per 4'x8' sheet** (spaced 12 inches apart on framing studs).
  • Joint Tape: You need roughly **12 to 15 linear feet of tape per sheet**.
  • Joint Compound: Estimate roughly **0.05 gallons of wet mud (or 0.8 lbs of powder) per square foot** of drywall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unless a window or door is huge (like commercial display windows), do **not** subtract them. Drywall is hung directly over window/door openings and cut out with a router afterwards. The cutouts are wasted, so the square footage must be accounted for in your purchase count.
Standard interior walls use **1/2-inch thick** drywall. Ceilings often use **5/8-inch thick** drywall (especially fire-rated Type-X) to prevent sagging between joists and add fire barrier properties.
